Project Description

Created in response to a need articulated by the two community-based organizations that the Fellow is partnering with (ACCORD and Adivasi Munetra Sangam/AMS), Barefoot Lawyers is an innovative grassroots approach taking effective action on behalf of the indigenous tribes of the Gudalur Region of the state of Tamil Nadu. A main component of the project is the recruitment and training of a group of indigenous people to work as ‘barefoot lawyers’ – to take up actions such as communicating to newspapers, writing petitions to government officials and filing cases in court.
